Using Astrology to Choose Where to Live

Astrocartography is the study of the intersection between natal astrology and place. This means it takes your birth chart, and maps the intersections between planets (Mars, Jupiter, Venus, etc.) and angles (ascendent/rising, midheaven, etc.). These points then become lines that are superimposed on a global map.

To put it simply, an astrocartology chart is telling you where a planet/angle conjunction would be, if you were born somewhere else. Here’s a personal example: My midheaven (an angle that represents reputation) is conjunct my sun on my birth chart. So, the Sun/Midheaven line runs through the town where I was born on my astrocartology map. However, had I been born on the East Coast, where my Saturn/Midheaven line is, then Saturn and my midheaven (MC) would have been conjunct on my birth chart.

Many of my friends are rethinking their home city and considering a change. Below, find my insights on how you can become your own interpreter and read your astrocartography chart.

How to Interpret Your Astrocartography Chart

If you’re interested in seeing your own astrocartography chart, I recommend Astro's free tool.

Once you input your birth info, you will see an intimidating mess of lines. But, if you zoom in and click on a line, a box will open up with a general interpretation. These alone can be quite helpful.

To go deeper, you can look up what lines are on/near ~5 places you've lived or traveled to, and what planet is associated.

  • First, journal some quick notes about how you felt in that place, and anything significant that happened.

  • Next, look at the interpretation of the line nearest that location, ideally within 70 miles, or so

  • Last, compare and contrast your lived experience with the general interpretation. This usually elicits some interesting insights! You can start to build your own interpretations this way.

Your personal takeaways will always vary a bit from the planet interpretations in an astrology tool or app, based on the way each point on your chart interacts. For example, if your chart is dominated by Mercury energy (lots of Virgo and Gemini placements), you might find Mercury lines to be especially magnetic for you.

Astrocartography for Planning Vacation and Relocation

Here’s another personal example: A Saturn line is considered a "harsh" place to live. I’ve lived in New York City on two separate occasions, and it’s right on my Saturn/MC line. And, I love it! I find it incredibly motivating and sensory. I have to admit, though, that there’s an intensity or pressure that seems to push me out. Since it’s Saturn with my Midheaven (MC), it makes sense I’ve found career success in NYC, and, that I found myself needing a break from the energy.

When I looked at some of my favorite places I’ve traveled, I realized they’ve been on Saturn lines, too! I’m confident no planet location is “bad” but that the themes of each planet and angle can help give context to the types of experiences and breakthrough the place may bring.

One last thought: The first time I moved to NYC was right before my Saturn Return, so significant transits can also attract you to a location.
