How to Unblock the Throat and Sacral Chakras (aka Energy Centers)

An open secret in energy healing is the connection between the throat and sacral chakras. The throat chakra, or fifth energy center, is related to self-expression, truth, and communication, while the sacral chakra, or second energy center, is about creativity, pleasure, and self-acceptance. Balanced creativity is the foundation for aligned self-expression, so the sacral is what fuels the throat chakra. Both regulate emotions, social ties, and belonging.

The special link between the throat and sacral chakras is further evidenced by polarity. The throat chakra has a positive charge, and the sacral chakra has a negative charge, so like opposite ends of batteries, they attract each other.

Similarly, the third eye chakra, or sixth energy center carries a negative charge, and the solar plexus chakra, or third energy center, has a positive charge, and these two are linked. Both represent guidance — listening to intuition, or listening to our gut.

All seven chakras join together to create the central channel, and each chakra is the center of one of the seven nestled dimensions. Because the higher dimensions contain the lower dimensions, an especially stubborn block can be loosened by simply moving down the channel to work on a lower chakra. For example, if your throat chakra is chronically blocked, you might focus on the heart.

But, knowing the link between the throat and sacral chakras, any issues related to creative self-expression are most potently healed and cleared by moving down even further and working on the sacral chakra first.

There are many techniques you can do on your own to keep the energy flowing harmoniously.

Sacral Chakra Healing

An issue in the sacral chakra will be most apparent when it manifests as low back pain or especially tender muscles when doing hip stretches. The emotional release that can happen during half pigeon pose in a yoga class is attributed to a clearing in the sacral chakra.

To focus your efforts on the sacral chakra, I recommend a simple yoga routine before bed that you can do on the floor or on the surface of your bed.

  • Baddha Konasana (Butterfly)

  • Paschimottanasana (Seated Forward Fold)

  • Half Pigeon

  • Supine Twist

Because the sacral chakra is associated with pleasure, you can stimulate it with whatever activities you find pleasurable. This might be a luscious hot bath with scented bath salts and a special candle, applying lotion to your own body, or cooking a delicious meal and giving yourself time to sit and savor every bite.

Every chakra is represented by a Bija mantra, and the sacral chakra’s is “VAAM.” You can hum this sound 5-10 times in the morning to help brings some movement to the sacral chakra. Additionally, each chakra is associated by a frequency, and sound healers offer music made by singing bowls that brings healing to each chakra. Check out my Spotify playlist for some lovely chakra music tracks.

An individual session with a reiki healer can be focused toward your sacral chakra and associated mental or emotional issues. Group donation-based sessions on the Insight Timer app will also provide support in regular maintenance of a clear chakra system.

Crystals for the sacral chakra include Carnelian, Tiger’s Eye, and Moonstone, which you can carry with you, or place on your low belly area while you meditate lying down to receive their healing benefits.

Finally, and my favorite way to commit to clearing my chakras, you can choose foods that match the chakra’s color. The sacral chakra is orange, so add to your grocery list some orange, sweet potato, tangerines, carrots, mango, peaches, orange bell peppers, and apricots.

Throat Chakra Healing

Feeling like no one is listening to you is a sure sign of a block in the throat chakra. It may also manifest as self-criticism or procrastination on creative projects.

Even if you are not a singer (ok, especially if you don’t sing well!) the most direct way to clear the throat chakra is to sing. You don’t have to do it in front of people. Rocking out to a pop ballad playlist in your car, or humming alone in your room can totally do the trick. Use neck rolls and a self-massage on your neck and throat to get in the mood.

Another practice is to free-write in your journal, with pen and paper, and then read what you’ve written aloud. This can be a letter to someone that you’ll never send, a letter to your younger or future self, or just a stream-of-consciousness expression of how you are feeling. Listening to your own voice reminds you that you are your own authority.

Of course, the Bija mantra for the throat chakra, “HAAM,” is going to be powerful. You can chant this 5-10 times in the morning to clear the cobwebs in your throat. Check out my Spotify playlist for singing bowl tracks made by sound healers that are designed for the throat chakra.

Book a session with a reiki healer to get personalized support on your throat chakra blocks, or attend a group donation based live event on the Insight Timer app.

A great crystal for the throat chakra is Lapis Lazuli, which you can carry with you, or place on your throat while you meditate lying down to receive its healing benefits.

And lastly, a few blue foods that will boost your throat chakra: blueberries and blackberries, as well as foods to soothe the throat physically, such as coconut water, herbal teas, honey, and lemon.

I help people like you cultivate self-trust, so you can live as your true self.
