Energy Protection for Creatives and Empaths
Do you identify as an empath? Highly sensitive? Intuitive? Creative?
Around the same time I began writing fiction, I started meditating to help me with writer’s block. Both of these activities boosted my intuition. I became more sensitive to noises and picking up emotions from songs or films.
Something I learned is that creatives are often people pleasers. This is because they have strong intuition. Their senses are turned up and take in more information, and its hard to know what to do with it. You sense the needs and expectations of everyone around you, but does that make you responsible to manage everyone else’s emotions? (No.)

Still, this can be a big drain on energy. The antidote is actually to build self-trust. This turns the intuition inward to what you want or need.
In this post, I’m going to share a few practical, everyday practices I’ve learned from my energy healing trainings that you can use to protect your energy.
How to Clear Your Energy
We are exchanging energy with people and places every day. It’s an element of how we communicate. It’s a survival skill. But, sometimes we take on the energy of others in an argument, or just walking by them on the street. So first, let’s learn a few practices to clear your energy and come back to center.
Smoke Through Feet
Take a deep breath in. On the exhale, make a sound, maybe a sigh or a hum, and visualize smoke coming out of your feet. It could be black smoke, white smoke, any color. Imagine the tension, the stress, and the negative energy leaving with the smoke, soaking up into the ground, and seeping down to the Earth’s core to be recycled (just like plants turn carbon dioxide to oxygen, the Earth turns negative energy to positive). Repeat this three times total.
Pop Roses
Imagine a rose in front of your face. It can be any color. It’s nice to switch up the color. Now, think of a specific emotion or thought that you want to banish from your mind and body. Maybe anger, obsessive thoughts about rejection, or shame from an embarrassing situation. Whatever this thought, emotion, or combination is, imagine you are pouring it into the rose. You might visualize a stream of water. Then, pop the rose like you would pop a bubble or a balloon. Poof! It’s totally gone. You can repeat a few more times, or even throughout the day, as much as it takes to feel relief.
Brush Body
After you get home from work, especially if you work in a service job, or after leaving a difficult situation or crowded space, pause and brush your body, head to toe, three times with your hands. It’s almost as if you are dusting yourself off or brushing water off after a shower. While you do this, hold the intention that you are releasing the energy of others that does not belong to you and is not your responsibility to hold.
Salt Bath
Soak in warm water and epsom salt for 20 minutes. Or, jump in the ocean for 90+ seconds. Both are great rituals for full and new moons.
How to Protect Your Energy
Once your energy is clear, you want to protect your inner peace.
Red Shield
The color red represents the Root Chakra, which is associated with safety and security. As you inhale, imagine a red streak being painted up your spine, tailbone to the top of your head. As you exhale, imagine the red color pouring out around you like a fountain, creating a bubble shape. Repeat a few more times, with each inhale bringing the color up through the center of your body, and each exhale painting a thicker wall around you.
You can do this before you leave the house in the morning, or even while you’re walking down the street, if you start to feel vulnerable.
Ground Space
In energy healing, it’s unethical to run energy on other people without their permission. But, we can always clear a physical space. Locate the four corners of the room where the walls meet the ceiling. Visualize ropes from all four coming together and connecting. Then, do the same for the four corners where the walls meet the floor. Now you have eight ropes pulled together at the center of the room.
From here, imagine a vortex or funnel, sort of like the bath water spinning as it goes down the drain. Imagine all the excess or negative energy being drained down the funnel, through the floor, into the center of the Earth.
We are always reading and exchanging energy, so sometimes people who are out of balance are able to (unconsciously) gravitate towards people who are sensitive and intuitive. By grounding the space, you help them balance their energy and prevent them from attaching to you.
Rose of Discernment
Similar to the rose exercise above, except this time, we don’t need to pop the rose. Simply visualize the rose between you and another person during a difficult conversation, or time travel and place the rose in a conference room where you’ll be having a meeting later, or at the airport where you’ll be rushing to a flight. You can also go back in time and place the rose at a place you had a bad experience. The more you practice, the more you’ll remember to bring the rose in at the moment you need it. What the rose does is soak up the negative or excess energies. That way, you can stay centered and calm no matter the circumstances.
